Since we just placed a medium-light roast and medium-dark roast Peaberry coffee on our menu, we wanted to take a few minutes to explain what “Peaberry coffee” is and is not. There are a lot of myths surrounding Peaberry coffee that are unfortunately nothing more than clever marketing by people in the coffee industry. While we can’t find the date when Peaberry coffee received a marketing rebranding of sorts, it was once discarded because it is technically a genetic green coffee defect where the coffee cherry produces only one deformed seed rather than two normally shaped seeds. Peaberry coffee is not a type of coffee plant variety that is grown or even identified prior to harvesting. Peaberry coffee seeds are discovered during the milling process and separated from the normal coffee seeds, and can be found from coffee plants all over the world. That being said, there are certain coffee plant varieties grown in certain regions that are more prone to producing Peaberry coffee seeds. Just as there is no such thing as “Peaberry Coffee” broadly speaking, there is no one flavor profile for all Peaberry coffees just like there is not one flavor profile for coffee in general. Some Peaberry coffees taste great and some don’t. Knowing this will at least shape and inform your expectations. Pay careful attention to the flavor descriptions provided by the roaster for clues if the coffee might have a flavor profile that appeals to you. There is world of flavor that awaits those who are willing to try new things!
