ALTO home cold brew filters are some of the most popular in the industry and for good reason. They are durable single use filters that make clean up simple. Simply put in the amount of ground coffee you prefer into the filter, place the filter into an airtight brewing vessel such as a quart or half-gallon mason jar, pour your desired amount of water into the filter to saturate the coffee, stir the coffee to ensure all ground coffee is saturated, tie draw string to the filter bag, seal up the brewing vessel, and allow to steep between 12-24 hours either on the counter at room temperature or in the refrigerator. One of the fantastic things about these filters is the ability to taste the cold brew in the brewing vessel and determine if you have reached the extraction level you prefer without getting a mouthful of coffee grounds. When you have reached the desired extraction level, simply remove the filter bag and discard. At 12 hours, most coffees will be brighter (more acidic) and lighter bodied. At 24 hours, most coffees will be very low in perceived acidity, very heavy in body, and stronger in flavor. We often find we prefer 16-18 hours for most coffees, but it is fun to experiment no only with steep time, but grind size, and with what is known as “hot blooming.” If you prefer to make a cold brew concentrate, try a 1:5 ratio (1 gram of coffee to 5 grams of water). If you prefer a ready to drink cold brew, try a 1:10 ratio (1 gram of coffee to 10 grams of water).
