The Hario V60 Mugen is a relatively new pour over dripper that requires far less skill and technique than the Hario V60 in order to get a great cup of coffee. The Mugen is designed for one continuous pour of water until you reach your target brew ratio though you can also use traditional multiple pour techniques.
The Mugen differs from the standard V60 in how the paper filter sits inside the brewer. The Mugen lacks the raised ridges of the standard V60, which allows the paper filter to adhere to the walls of the Mugen. This results in a slower draw down time than the Standard V60 because little to no water can bypass the bed of the coffee as the water drains through the brewer. Because of the slower draw down time, the brewer is much more forgiving and easier to brew with than a traditional V60.
While Hario offers this brewer in both glass and ceramic, we prefer the plastic V60 because it retains more heat, is lighter, and is much more durable.
If you purchase this brewer, you will also need to purchase the paper filters we carry that are designed to fit the brewer.
While you don’t have to have a gooseneck pouring kettle to use the Mugen, it helps. Gooseneck kettles restrict the flow of water, which allows you to accurately pour a repeatable amount of water each time and reduces agitation of the coffee while pouring. We use and recommend two electric options, which allow you to precisely control the water temperature: 1) The Bonavita variable temperature electric kettle and 2) the Fellow Stagg EKG electric kettle. The Fellow Stagg has a restricted flow rate, which offers more precision. The Stagg also has a nice feature of heating the water back to the set temperature when placed back on the base, which the Bonavita does not do.
As with other brewing equipment we are currently offering, we make little to no profit on this product and are primarily recovering our costs. The goal is to maintain a limited offering of brewing equipment we use and recommend so that you do not have to wait on the items to be shipped to Ketchikan.
We will be offering our favorite V60 brew recipes in the near future.
